What Fashion Week Brought Home With Me

There are experiences in your career that teach you something new, and then there are experiences that quietly change the way you see your work.

My time at Fashion Week in Berlin with La Biosthétique and La Biosthétique Canada was the latter.

Being surrounded by artists, hairstylists, friends, designers and creatives from around the world was incredibly inspiring. There is something about stepping outside of your everyday environment and seeing your craft through an entirely different lens. Hair becomes more than a service. It becomes part of a larger conversation about fashion, identity, proportion, movement and the way we choose to present ourselves to the world.

And strangely, I came home thinking less about trends and more about individuality.

Fashion Is Inspiration. Personal Style Is the Goal.

Fashion Week is, by nature, heightened. The hair, clothing and creative direction are designed to communicate an idea. But underneath all of that creativity is something I’ve always believed about great hair: it has to belong to the person wearing it.

I don’t want my clients to walk out looking like a trend.

I want them to look like themselves—only more considered.

Fashion gives us an incredible vocabulary to pull from. A shape. A texture. A fringe. A colour placement. A feeling. My job is to understand those references and translate them into something that works with your face, your hair, your lifestyle and your personal style.

That distinction became even clearer to me in Berlin.

The Details Matter

Working in an environment like Fashion Week also reinforces how much the smallest details can change the whole picture.

The placement of a part. The weight left around the cheekbone. Where a fringe opens. Whether hair feels polished or slightly undone. The warmth of a brunette. The softness of a blonde. The way a haircut moves rather than simply how it looks standing still.

Those decisions can seem tiny in isolation, but together they create the feeling of the finished look.

After nearly two decades behind the chair, I still find that exciting.

There is always another level of refinement.

Bringing the World Back Behind the Chair

One of the reasons continuing education and experiences like Fashion Week matter so much to me is that they don’t stay there.

I bring them home.

My clients may never want runway hair—and that’s not really the point.

What I bring back is a sharper eye. New references. Different techniques. A broader understanding of what is happening in hair and fashion internationally. And, maybe most importantly, renewed curiosity about my craft.

It changes the questions I ask when you sit in my chair.

What feels current without feeling temporary?

What could we change while still making you feel like yourself?

How can your colour grow out beautifully?

Where should your haircut carry weight?

What will actually work when you’re doing your own hair on a Tuesday morning?

To me, great hair exists somewhere between artistry and real life.

A Global Perspective, Made Personal

My relationship with La Biosthétique has given me opportunities to experience an international community of hairdressing that I deeply value. Fashion Week was another reminder that our industry is constantly evolving—and that staying inspired is part of being able to give my best work to the people who trust me with their hair.

But perhaps the biggest thing I brought home wasn’t a particular technique or trend.

It was perspective.

I came back wanting to be even more intentional.

To look more closely.

To edit rather than add.

To create hair that feels modern without trying too hard.

To pay attention to the person before the hair.

Because ultimately, my work isn’t about recreating what I saw in Berlin.

It’s about allowing everything I saw, learned and experienced there to make me better at seeing you.

And that is what I get to bring back to the chair.
